Wichita Applies For Nearly $1M In Community Service Block Grants

The City of Wichita is applying for nearly $1 million in federal grants that would go toward services for low-income individuals.

The city is asking for $943,594 in Community Service Block Grants, which are provided by the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services and administered by the Kansas Housing Resources Corporation.

Nearly half of the funding would go toward the Wichita Sedgwick County Community Action Partnership, which helps families living in public or Section 8 housing.

Project Access, a network of doctors in Sedgwick County who volunteer their time to give low-income and uninsured residents health care, would receive $200,000.

The program is funded by both the City of Wichita and Sedgwick County. During last year’s budget talks, county commissioners threatened to drastically cut funding for Project Access.

At a meeting Tuesday, Wichita Mayor Jeff Longwell urged the county to maintain their support for the program in the future.

“We are fully funding project access again this year and would encourage them to do the same thing,” Longwell said.

The block grant funding would also go toward job training for low-income residents.

City officials say it's likely the funding will be approved.
