Monday @ The Movies - Black Orpheus, Music Of Cuba & Scandinavia + Birthdays

Monday, October 17

Global Village spends another Monday at the Movies, this time with Black Orpheus for the birthday of guitarist Luiz Bonfa who wrote two of the key songs for that groundbreaking Brazilian film. It is also the birthday of ska trombonist Rico Rodriguez (also doing a couple of movie related numbers) and Ziggy Marley – and there’s new music from Madeleine Peyroux, Raging Fyah and the Rough Guide to Ethiopian Jazz.

Tuesday, October 18

Global Village heads to Scandinavia for music from artists ranging from the traditional to the contemporary – incorporating not only folk music of the region, but world, jazz, rock and other influences in fresh and intriguing new ways. Among the groups and artists featured – internationally acclaimed folk-rock ensemble Varttina, long-running eclectic band Piirpauke, neo-folk rocker Pekko Kappi, folk jazz artist Sinikka Langeland, the all harmonica and mouth organ band Svang, the English-Scandinavian folk-jazz ensemble Fatdog,  and American saxophonist Juli Wood with jazz reinterpretations of Finnish folk songs.

Wednesday, October 19

Global Village marks the birthday of Peter Tosh with music did under his own name and with the Wailers (including music from the first Wailers’ album, which was just recently reissued for the first time in the US with the original cover art). Plus more Cuban sounds for the October feature from Ska Cubano, Cuarteto Patrio with Eliades Ochoa (who also appeared with Buena Vista Social Club), and a new album from L.A.’s Changui Majadero, inspired by the music of eastern Cuba – and new music from Terceto Kali, Mehmet Ali Sanlikol and the Urgent Jumping East Africa compilation.

Thursday, October 20

Global Village dips into several exquisite albums from Tunisian oud player Anouar Brahem for his birthday. Plus music from acclaimed Cuban-born saxophone and clarinet player Paquito D’Rivera for the October Cuban music feature  - and the latest from Snarky Puppy, 9Bach, and NEA Heritage Fellow Rahim Alhaj with Indian sarodist Amjad Ali Khan.

Friday, October 21

Throughout October, Global Village is featuring Cuban and Cuban-related music and has birthdays of two great artists to celebrate this time in conjunction with the feature – the Cuban-born Queen of Salsa Celia Cruz, and Afro-Cuban jazz pioneer (among his many accomplishments and innovations), Dizzy Gillespie. We’ll highlight an early Latin jazz classic Gillespie wrote, along with music he did with his United Nation Orchestra and that drew on Caribbean and African influences – and music Celia Cruz did early in her career with Sonora Mantancera, on the Fania label, and from a later classic recording.
